medium network re-design

We have a 40 users Gigabit network: 4 servers, 70 PCs, 4 MACs, 10 net printers, 512/256 sat Internet. A fibre backbone, one central D-Link DGS1224T, another DGS1224T, DGS1216T, Planet (unmanaged) (via fibre, daisy chain), another 3 of 16 unmanaged Gigabit D-Link, two Catalyst WS-C2950-24, and a few 100Mb switches on a 4 layer network. The activities are: public relations, accounting, desktop publishing, civil and mechanical/electrical engineering. We use database and file server, all run Windows (XP&2003). About 15 POP3 clients of external ISP and about 7 web users. Two servers and about 25 clients have Gigabit. In the future through the network will connect electrical/caloric analyzers, BMS, anti fire systems. We cannot return to 100Mb. We need first of all a trusty network.
The (web) managed D-Link switches, first stop response the interface (and the ping), after a while (days) parts of the network stop working. Only a power off/on cycle of the affected switches can establish the connections. We cannot find the cause. There may be faulty cables? The broadcast is about 17%, no multicast, little errors on the central switch. A D-Link support said the MAC table overfills.
I'm thinking to buy a 44+4 (fibre) Gigabit managed central switch and use with one Catalyst for the most part of the network in a two layers switch network. The fibre connections will be star topology and connect a few long distance workstations and devices. Also will be able to find any wire problems since every workstation will be connected directly to a managed switch (in the present is not the case). I choose Linksys SRW2048 (for the price, we cannot go with Cicso like or HP like). I would prefer Dell, but didn't find 44+4 Gigabit.
I'm asking your opinion for this and any other suggestions. The MAC table of the Linksys has the same size of the present central D-Link, really can overflow? Is Linksys a good choice for our case?

humm fiber if you can afford it is the way to go. You say you've got a fiber backbone so why not?

Linksys is good for consumers. It's not good for business. Linksys is not Cisco though is a division of Cisco [I would imagine they bought Linksys to get into the consumer market.

Stay with Cisco products. Pricy but you know they work the way they are supposed to work.

What you can do on some managed switches like the Catalyst switches] is assign a computer to a port by MAC address.That way the switch isn't constantly updating the MAC table learning who's who and where and on what port. Layer 2 switches are like layer 3 routers in intelligence level. the only difference is switches don't manipulate[repackage packets] packets like routers do.

you mention that you can stay with 100baseT but all that you present doesn't indicate a need for 1000baseT. Your network problems seem to stem from your switching setup. Even your future additions to the network doesn't indicate that 1000baseT is an absolute necessity.

The Switch problems generally stem from Voltage Spikes and scramble the Switches. If this is happening on a regular basis I would be looking at putting in a UPS between the Switches and the mains to provide a constant uninterrupted power supply.

I however do agree that going all Fibre would be a better option if it's possible but if you have a heavy Power Drain on a regular basis even the Fibre Switches may be affected.

We had something similar happen when a newspaper opened it's doors up the road recently and every Saturday Night the Burglar Alarm would trip as well as the LAN would be down on Monday Morning when most of the staff started work and we had to cycle down the switches and back on again.

Try activating the Spanning Tree Protocol to the Switches that support it. You should also check the cabling between all your network elements. Maybe there are loops somewhere in your net.
