    Member server as DNS Server???

    Locked

    by flyfshmn ·

Can a W2K member server exist as the DNS server in a mixed evirionment? We have not yet moved to AD and use a PDC. We use a corparate DNS server currently. We would like to use the corp server as the seconday server in the list and start to use a local W2K box for DNS locally on the network.

Also would like to use DHCP on the same W2K box. All 2000 servers are W2K advanced. What is needed for me to complete this task???

    Thanks

Yes you can use a member server to host DNS and DHCP services. Simply install them from Add/Remove programs, Windows components control panel.
You can configure DNS to forward unresolved requests to your corporate DNS server and just have your workstations point to the W2K DNS server.
If you wanted to integrate DNS into AD you would need to install it on a domain controller. But you can always do that after you upgrade your domain.

In an NT4 domain, all you really need to do is install the DNS and DHCP server services. These services will be configured in essentially the same way you would configure an NT4 DNS or DHCP server. They will also function just as an NT4 DNS or DHCP server would.

You should see no compatibility issues.

Setting up DNS locally now will also make your job easier once it comes time to move to AD.
