I installed some VeriTech 512m DDR 400 RAM. I then installed it (correctly) and started computer. Noticed that there was a plastic burning smell. No screen display. Turned pc off. Looked at Memory, realised that it had burn mark on it and the DIMM Slot. Got new Ram. installed it into second slot and nothing happens on reboot. Placed in third slot and again nothing. wonderirng if my GA-8ST 667 Gigabyte Mainboard is not compliant with 400mhz RAM. I would of thought it would of slowed ram down not burn it. Tech says the voltage is same on both 333 and 400mhz ram and couldn’t be the result of non-compliance with mainboard. would I need to get a new mainboard? if so what would be compatable with socket 478 1.7gHz P4 Pentium Chip?
