Memory not recognized in Windows

By Shanghai Sam ·
I am attempting to add 128 MB to an Epox motherboard (EP-MVP3G). There is an existing 64 MB PC100 DIMM installed. The BIOS recognizes 196 MB of RAM during bootup, but Windows only reports 64 MB. No error messages or beep codes to indicate any problems. I have gone to the Epox web site to check for updates, but the English version will be down 3-5 business days.

Memory not recognized in Windows

Start by entering setup at boot.
Look through the advanced and chipset sections to verify that there are no settings that limit the amount of memory reported.
There is a switch in most BIOS's to not report memory over 64MB. This is a holdover from OS/2. Make sure that his is set correctly.

If you don't find anything, you don't need to do anything, just exit and save settings. Sometimes that changes how hardware is reported.

If that doesn't clear things up, it is possible that the 2 DIMMs are incompatible.
When this happens, Windows usually refuses to boot.
Check with www.crucial.com to see what style of DIMM they recommend for your MB.

Hi,

The other thing to try is to reverse the order of the chips in your MB - so that the 128Mb one is in position 1. Some motherboards are finicky about this...

Cheers,
Tim.

Check the manual for your motherboard and see if you need to change the jumper settings.
