How can an newbie on the help desk for IT get a mentor? For knowledge and guidance. I need focus on career directives.

Usually it is best to choose someone slightly above you in skill levels and ask them if you can discuss with them some of the issues that come up in your work. If they say yes, then think hard about the first question you ask them for help on. It has to be one you are very sure you don't know how to answer and one you know is in their area of expertise.

If you are a newbie on the help desk I would suggest doing the best possible job you can and after 3-6 months talk to your supervisor or another senior person about where you would like to go in IT and their suggestions as to how to get there. Until you have some kind of a track record in your current job it is not very fruitful to project very far ahead.
