Merging an unused partition

By sp4566 ·
Does anyone know if one can merge an unused partition into the boot partition without any loss of data?

There is Always Risk

There are many ways to merge partitions. The safest is to use a partition manager such as Partition Magic.

However, there is ALWAYS a risk of data lose. It is best practice and a darn good idea to back up all data and critical information before attempting to adjust partition sizes.

Personally, I would consider moving your data to the unused partition. That would both free up space on the boot partition and make it a fairly easy task to back up just your files.

One last thought. Make sure this is unused drive space and not the restore partition on the hard drive.

Since Norton no longer offers Partition Magic, and I'm basically cheap anyway, are there alternatives, especially in freeware?

If your Partition

is adjacent to the Primary Partition and the Partition is empty you should be able to merge them. I normally Clone the Primary Partition first just in case something goes wrong.

If it can be done with System Commander it can be done. But I don't know how to physically edit the partition.

Merge Partition with software?

by softfan In reply to Merging an unused partiti ...

I happened to see that easeus partition master has been released to the 9.0 version, with which one can merge partitions without formatting, does it safe enough to use? Or I should backup my data first?
