Merging two trees

By Corky132 ·
I have one 4.11 server that we are planning on merging into a 5.0 NDS tree. What's the best way of doing this. Has anyone used DSMerge will success? Can this be accomplished without dsmerge? any help would be appreciated.

The servers holding the master replicas of the root partitions of the two trees MUST be either 4.x or 5.x, they cannot be different. Reference TID 10013529 (05/01/2000).

The way I would do this is upgrade the 4.11 server to Netware 5.0 with the same version of DS. This assumes that the hardware on your netware 4.11 server will meet Netware 5 minimum hardware requirement. The install will ask you if you would like to create a new tree or install to a existing tree? You would install it into a existing tree.

But you'll lose all the data in the old tree..

The two seperate Trees must be of the same OS. So, upgrading the 4.11 tree to 5.X is the first step. When upgrading, do not choose the 5.X tree as your destination because you will lose your entire 4.11 tree. Maintain the two seperate trees during the upgrade. When the upgrade is complete, you can work with two co-existing trees until you are satisfied with the stabitlity.
Using the DSMerge utility can be a wonderful experience. It can also be the destruction of lesser Engineers. I have had good merges and bad merges so plan it for a Friday. That will give you the entire weekend to repair any major problems.
Good luck.
