Microphone no sound on play back

Windows Home Premium
The Microphone seems to be recording ok with the sound recorder the levels are set to max.
But when playing back the file there is no sound.

#1 What gives you the impression that the microphone "seems to be recording ok"?

Is there any visual indication of incoming sound? What software are you using for these recordings?

#2 What software are you using for sound playback? What filetype is this recording?

Have you invoked the 'Advanced' options within sound properties?

If you are using a Hi-Definition sound system, there are five possible output channels (including Green Blue & Pink), which at present may well be muted.
