microphone will not record sound

By mindcrazy ·
OK here goes...I am running win98se, via chipset VT82C686A with integrated sound. The sound is supposed to be supported by Realtek (AC97 codec). I have installed/uninstalled every driver for this chipset you can find. From Realtek, Via, Avance, and from the original Motherboard disk. I get absolutley no sound using the win98se drivers, but I do get sound using win 9x drivers. I am satisfied with that, but the microphone will not record. You can hear your voice through the speakers, it is not muted, it is selected as the recording device, but will not record. (yes it is plugged in to the right spot and I have tried another working microphone) I have heard other techs having similar problems when the sound is integrated, but I have not foundany solutions. If you have any ideas please let me know. one more tidbit, the recording volume slider is grayed out so you can't move it, along with the balance of the microphone.

System is running AMD Duron 650 w/ 128mb ram

I do believe your problem is due to the integrated sound. The only thing I can think of is to buy a new sound card. (I recommend ESS and Creative Labs.) I am not too fond of integration, it only has caused problems for me in the past.

I suggest you try to "de-integrate" your computer if possible.

If you can, borrow a sound card before you go out and buy one, just as a precation so you dont waste $$.

I went out and purchased a new card. Bingo I have recording and it sounds 100% better. I had that option in mind, but I am a person that likes to fix what is broke. NO fixing this one, just bypass it.

suggestion try an old dos based recording program and see if it operates. Mic could be muted in windows or another software app within windows.

I had already tried that but thanks for the help. I just bought a new card and disabled the on board sound. Works great.

I have seen this issue with propritary systems such as v-box , they come with windows 98 se and look real close at that motherboard disk especially if it has drivers on it ! My expieriance had at one time gotten me real familiar with device manager. If there are drivers on the mother board disk explore it and read your .TXT files they may have a wealth of information ? windows does'nt always have the answers though it is a nice system mother board drivers could be your solution ! Good luck fromchaosad

Thanks for the reply, it could have helped a couple years ago. I am a tech so I am very familar with drivers and the device manager. I tried every driver available oinn the MB disk along with every different ones from the net. I never did find the problem, I finally brooke down and bought a new card.
