Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Redundancy

By lmarsh ·
We currently have an Exchange server running on an IBM Netfinity 5100 supporting approximately 1100 users. We use Cheyenne ArcServe to backup mailboxes but it isn't always reliable. Are there solutions out there that will provide Exchange server redundancy in case of a hardware failure that won't cause email downtime? If so what products are available?

Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Redundancy

by lee.scorey In reply to Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Re ...

For server redundancy you are looking for a Cluster solution.

This is available through Microsoft NT 4.0 Server Enterprise. Veritas also provide a software Cluster solution which is supposedly not at picky as Microsoft (MS requireslike-for-like server hardware).

We have the Microsoft solution here (in Active/Pasive)for our Exchange and I'll be honest when I say I am not particularly impressed with it. If the active server fails it takes about 20 minutes for the passive server to take overall the services (which is just Exchange). The problem could be down to our cluster configuration but I don't know enough to start debugging it just yet.
