microsoft products will not open files

By dssquirt ·
Hello. I'm not quite sure where to post this as this is my first post. I recently had a new hard drive installed. Most things are working correctly. However, when I go into a Microsoft program, word, excel, etc. I cannot get files to open. There is no error message, the program just freezes up. If I go directly to where the file is located and click on the file it will open.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the products twice and cannot understand where the error is. Anyone have an idea how this can be fixed?

Try running the system file checker START>RUN>(type)sfc.exe hit enter , it also may be an issue with teh saved paths though.

The proper forum for these issues is Technical Q&A found here: http://techrepublic.com.com/5221-6239-0.html

Quite likely that Path(s) changed.

When you re-installed to new HD, if you did not re-establish the Paths variable(s)in the Environment identically as they had been on your old install, the applications will not know where to find their respective data files.

Opening by clicking on the files works because the Registry contains knowledge of which application to use for specified file extensions.

This suggests that the Command Path is ok, but that the Data Path(s)is(are) not.

And, as Oz noted, the Tech. Q&A area is intended for use in asking these kinds of questions.
