Microsoft Windows XP - Strange files

By michaelramosit ·
In the C drive of a user multiple files appeared named "Recued document 1.txt" all the way to "Recued document 54.txt" and three other ones named "~$scued document.txt", "~$scued document 1.txt", and "~$scued document 2.txt". Most of the files have nothing in them and others have what looks like a email message. Does outlook do stuff like this, has anyone seen this before?

Crash leftovers

by CharlieSpencer In reply to Microsoft Windows XP - St ...

These files occur occasionally if the system crashes with Office files open. Check the dates on them and you'll probably find one of two things.

1) They all have the same date and time, or have a few dates and times in common. This indicates the date and time the system crashed and the number of open Office files that were corrupted at the time. Unless you noticed you were missing something in particular from those dates, you can probably delete the files.

2) If the files all have a different date and the time is always late in the afternoon, the user is powering down the computer at the switch without closing and files and performing an orderly shutdown. I had a user years ago with 4Gb of recovered files on a 10Gb drive!
