Microsoft Word 97 lockups whole PC

by pchw . Updated 25 years, 6 months ago

Using Word 97 on NT 4.0 HP Vectra PCs w/128 meg ram. On some PCs Word locks up the whole machine indiscriminitely w/no warning. Appears to be profile related, and rebuilding profile usually works . . . for a while. Have tried disableheaplookasidereg hack, extending home directory to user’s personal folder, running a switch on the normal.dot to bypass it and generate fresh one on launch, delete normal.dot, disable spell and grammar check as typing, deleting the 8.0 word data key in the registry, which is tantamount to rebuilding the profile, rebuilt the machine, you name it. Some stuff works on some machines, other machines require 2 or more fixes, and on some machines nothing helps. The thing that works most conistently is rebuildingthe profile, but that doesn’t always work. Sometimes it works forever. Sometimes it works for one hour. Sometimes rebuilding the profile a second time works, and sometimes it has to be rebuilt MANY times. We are dealing with VERY FEW roaming profiles. This problem is MOSTLY with local profiles. We have been working with Microsoft and have come up with solutions they haven’t considered, even. I am at a loss. We have had this problem for over a year, so it’s getting a little frustrating. Thanks for any help you can provide.
