Microsoft Word Formatting Anyone?

By pjalexander ·
Anyone know how to override Microsoft's automatic formatting?

How do you change the default tabs for bullets and numbers?

How do you keep Word from reformatting the entire document when you change the formatting of, for example, two words at the beginning of a paragraph?

Friends have tried changing the styles for the various inscrutably named types of text, to no avail.

Help! It is always worst when we are in the last hours of a grant deadline.

PJ,

In Word 97, you can override many of the Autoformatting issues by going to Tools > AutoCorrect and selecting the various items you wish to have 'turned off'. There are several Tabs with many items per tab. You may have to 'play around' to find the settings that suit you the best.

Hope this helps,

Thomas

Answer #1 should take care of the autoformatting problems. As for the tabs and settings for numbers and bullets. If you click on Format on the top menu and then Bullets and Numbers, click on a style thats close (just for someplace to start) and then click the Customize button at the bottom of the window. This will let you change everything from the bullet/number style to the indentation (tab) settings. If you use that customized bullet or number, Word will remember it and you can just clickthe bullet or numbering button. If you use multiple bullet or numbering styles and need to switch back and forth between them, you can always click on Format again, then Bullets and Numbering again, and double click the customized bullet or number style you want to use. If you have questions or problems about this answer, please feel free to e-mail me.

To change the formatting of just two words or even a single letter. Type out the sentence or heading or whatever. THen select just the characters you want to appear differently. Select the options you want Font to a differnt style, bold, size, etc. Click somewhere else and you're done.

Save your document often.

You can also permanently change the default margin and font settings by clicking on the "Default" button in the lower left of the Font or Page Set Up pop up windows. This will change the default settings to whatever you've choosen.

I personally dislike the 1.25" left and right margin settings.
