Problem: The user cannot use Microsoft Word. The error message reads, "There is not enough memory or disk space," and is titled, "Winword has caused an error in user.exe." The problem began when he was opening some files from "Person A." Files may have been corrupt?
So what I need is a list of support methods for the problem because I have to troubleshoot over the phone with a non-technical management guy. Some ideas are replacing the normal.dot file, repairing IE, reinstalling printer, reinstall office, scanning c drive for viruses or breaks, other?

Is office assistant running? If it is I would get rid of it. Are there any elaborate backgrounds running? (Webshots, etc.) I would get rid of anything like that too. It's always a good idea to have some sort of virus protection in fact recently I've found you can *almost* never rule a virus out of the equation.
Something fairly quick you could try to is to just re-install Word from the Office 2000 install, you don't have to re-install the whole thing - it lets you reinstall the Word portion - I've had strange errors w/Word 2000 and usuall a re-install solves it.
Repairing IE, reinstalling printer, etc.? - Not relevant.
Certainly make sure there are not a lot of background processes running - check the system tray, especially. Also bring up Task Manager and see what's running.
Check disk space. Word will want to try to make a copy of the file for temporary use and this will be in your system's TEMP directory (typically C:\TMP or something like that). This is especially important if this is a big file.
And don't forget to check for good size blocks of contiguous disk space. Get a good defrag utility.
Oh, and can the user just bring up Word by itself, with a blank, new document?
Of course your virus protection is running and current.
I ran into these error messages when I got nimda'd two weeks ago. Solution fro me was to clean out nimda with one of the cleaners available on the net (Symantec or Trend Micro) and then to replace the riched20.dll on the pc using the extract command.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
