Microsoft’s new patent on viewer focused advertising

by ijusth1 . Updated 19 years, 2 months ago

Read an article on how Microsoft has a patent on a new adviertising process whereby viewer a billboard, display or kiosk would show you advertising based on facial recognition, RFID or some other sensor based methodology. On the (pun intended) face of it this seems to be not necessarily a bad concept but think of the potential invasion of privacy that this would produce. Microsoft claims that the vendor does not know who you are but MS sure would (or whomever is feeding that display that data). Also not only you but others around you see the advertising you see. Lets say you recently bought something expensive for someone other then your spouse. You visit the same store and it tells you that they have a new product that complements your previous purchase. Now you have some explaining to do to your significant other about this purchase. Another situation would be if you bought some alcoholic product and that could be perceived badly by someone standing with you. I am sure there are many other examples. Sound very scary to me.
