Migrate AD from Win2k to Win2003

By davenportkurt ·
Just to clarify, I have an older Win2k server that is the DC at the moment but would like to move this role to a Win2003 server that is at the moment only a member server. Can I use ADMT for this? I tried to promote the Win2003 server to a secondary DC but it always gives me an error not matter how many times I have run the adprep /forestprep _ /domainprep on the older server.

I do not want to upgrade the older one, just move the DC role to the Win2003 server.

Thanks in advance

That message tells you what you need to do, it just isn't quite clear enough.
On the 2k DC you need to insert the 2003 CD and run the adprep file with those switches.
Now if the 2003 server is r2 you will need to use the adprep file that's on the second CD. Once you have completed this operation you can DCPROMO the 2003 box.

Just remember to migrate the FSMO roles and make the new server a global catalog before you demote the old server rebuild it.
Here is a link if you're unsure.

Best of luck.
