Migrate NT4 Permissions

By Rabbit_Runner ·
Hi,We have an NT4 (sp6a) server with IIS4 which runs our FTP site. This FTP site has a large number of folders for different customers and staff. Each of these folders has specific permissions assigned for security.

We are needing to upgrade the hardware on this server, and it means getting a completely different set of hardware items. In addition, we want to make some adjustments in the OS. The OS is on cdrive, the FTP folders are on ddrive.

My question, is there a simple method of copying or restoring, the FTP folders to the new server, AND MAINTAIN all the folder permissions? Having to re-assign all the current permissions would be a major problem. There is no question or problem of the 'data', our only question is that we want to maintain the folder permissions when they are moved / copied to the new system.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Migrate NT4 Permissions

Two easy methods, you pick:

1. Tape backup set to backup and restore ACLs

2. Robocopy from the NT4 Resource Kit using the /SEC switch to replicate security settings. (Works best when source and destination have identical roles in the authentication structure, so SIDs are recognized.

Two additional methods that cost money:

3. Use Secure copy by smallwonders.com
4. Use Security Explorer to backup up the Perms on the entire directory structure, copy/move the data and then restore theperms.

I strongly suggest option #2 if you have a location to temporarily store all the files because it is the fastest and I believe the NT4 reskit is available for free use now. If you choose this method note there are 2 different versions of Robocopy.exe, get the latest from Supplement 4 and use both the /MIR and the /SEC switches in case the copy process is accidentally halted. In all cases of course backup the data to tape prior to any modifications.

Good Luck
