Migrate Primary PDC to W2K8 retain IP

By danzmanz ·
Hello,

I am currently running my primary domain controller on a 2k3 server. I would like to build a new PDC on a w2k8 R2 server with same IP but different name.

What is the simplest way to do this?

Can't do both at once

You'll have to set it up on a new IP, then change the IP after it is built.

Another thought might be to set it up on a completely different subnet, then add the IP for the Domain's subnet. That would keep users out of it until it is ready.

For example, if you're on a 10.x.x.x network, set up a couple of 172.16.x.x/255.255.255.0 IP's for the old and new servers, just for the build. Then, once the 2K8 is ready to go, change the IP of the 2K3 server and demote it to secondary, and add the desired 10.x IP address on the new 2K8 box.

Good Luck!
