Migrate printers from NT4 to Win2k

By badfish ·
Anyone know of an easier way to move printers from an NT4 print server to a 2000 Server? I really don't want to re-create 200+ printers. I have read I can't use PRINTMIG utility. Am hoping someone has an alternative solution :)
Thanks!

This states that you definately can not use this tool.

If you are proficient with shell scripting you might be able to use rmtshare.exe from pedistalsoftware.com to create your printer shares.

I think you are pretty much bound to recreating all the printers though. I am an admin at Kodak and happen to be managing a large scale print server consolidation effort and have been though a huge search for all the shortcuts and have not found a great one yet, so I'll keep an eye on this to see ifanyone else has found a better way.

Good luck

Thanks for the response Curious_George. I have done a little research on this and did come across this MS article. In the article it states "Do not use this tool to upgrade a Windows NT 4.0-based printer server to a Windows 2000-based printer server. " So I cannot use PRINTMIG and was looking for another options besides manually setting up all the printers. Thanks

Well, to accomplish this task you need a third-party software.
The best that suites your needs is NetIQ Server Consolidator - one of its abilities is printer migration between NT and W2K.
Server Consolidator can migrate both local and network printers from one server to another. This process includes the printer port, print monitor, printer drivers, print queues, and printer shares.
But as everything in this life it's not free

Good luck,

Well I just read the FAQs and it looks like there is absolutely no way to get the question reopened or this fixed. I don't have your email to apologize, but I really wanted to give you the points Vagabond, your answer did help me. Thanks! (for whatit is worth)
