Migrating an old SBS 4.5 server to a New

By jeff ·
Hi, thanks for taking a look at this quesiton, It's not a simple answer, but I'll take anything you got, so here it goes. . . . . I have a current NT server, SP5, running SBS 4.5 upgraded from SBS 4.0. It is also running SQL, Exchange 5.5, and Proxy. This customer has decided to replace the older server with a brand new one. My question is : Is there a way to migrate all of these services, plus users, security, and data without having to rebuild everthing from scratch? I know there are migration methods if the server is running staight NT, but I have never performed a migration on a SBS server. I am not looking for step by step instructions, just a few good articles, Internet sites or other support groups would be extrememly helpful. I also have Tech Net available if there are some Q articles that I might be over looking. Any other advice or past experiences would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to e-mail me if more detail is required or if you have any additional quesitons.Thanks. JEFF

There is a Q article Q241871 "SBS Disaster Recovery planning and producures"

There is a whole section devoting to moving the system to new hardware and all the steps covered in the process.

At the bottom of the article is also mention all the other related Q's.

hope this helps

Andy

Q article Q241871 "SBS Disaster Recovery planning and producures" was a good starting place, but not enough to cover all the questions and possible situations for this particular migration. A tech call to MS was needed to get the answers we needed. We ended up installing a fresh copy of the OS and all other software, to the new server and then installing the old hard drive from the old server in the new server in order to move the data quickly. The tape backup would have taken 5 times as long. Unfortunately there is not a good was to perform a SBS move to a different server due to it's limitations with multiple servers. Norton Ghost is not reliable enough to perform such a critical move. Thanks for your efforts. JEFF

1. Read Microsoft Knowledge Base Article: Q228980 - Upgrading from SBS 4.0 to SBS 4.5 When Migrating from One Computer to Another.

2. If the machines are IDENTICAL, you have two simpler options:

2.a. Create a mirror on the old machine. Shut down the machine. Move the mirror to the new machine. Boot up.

2.b. Use Norton GHOST to create a partition image of the old machine. Move the image to the HDD of the new machine.

Good Luck
