Migrating Exchange 5.5 from SBS to W2K

By jakevincent ·
Hi All,
I've recently been put in the sticky situation of migrating Exchange 5.5 from its current location on a SBS 4.5 server to a Win2K Server. I've recieved conflicting information regarding this procedure, which makes my job no less easier. Thetwo servers are on the same LAN, but on separate domains, and since SBS can be the only DC in it's domain and the W2K Server is setup as the AD DC, there doesn't seem to be a way to a) Establish a trust relationship between the two and b)Effectivelymigrate all users and there mailboxes across.

All responses are welcome.

Regards
Jason

Migrating Exchange 5.5 from SBS to W2K

OK this is way out there and licensing is not under consideration here ; just the end result :)

I have not been able to transfer since SBS easily is single domain structure only.
Also this assumes SBS 4.5 and exchange 5.5

I have done this only to certain extent so you might consider it if it is not to much work.
i have transfered nt4 sbs to nt4 + full exchvange 5.5
first i backed up SAM and SECURITY. I copied them to reinstalled nt4 on fat16 in dos mode. that resurected users to my surprise. then i isntalled the exchange and imported the addresses from text export . obviously you could then upgrade to win2k or from a trust. what about mailboxes? well priv and public edb. you could setup new exchange and just try to see if you could shutdown, copy the the edbs to new "real exchange" overwriting and then voila "trust" away.If edb are same between SBS and "real" 5.5 it should work.
Since my customer did not care about mailbox content it was much easier.

By no means not afix but maybe a good pointer:)
