Migrating File shares to another server

By k4k ·

I have a huge file shares on one of the file
server. there are about 800 file share under which hundreds of sub folder & other shares resides.

i need a tool which is not much complex so that i can make a replica of the file server on a new server with all the shares & ntfs permission copied along with the shares & folders.

i have tested dumpsec & robocopy. its not suitable for large numbers of share migration.

any tools which make this share migration simple.

Under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Shares Export The Folder Then Import it into the registry of the new server Once all the files have been copied. The only downside is the file structure must remain the same and if you use local groups, you will need to alter the security on each share. I have not done this before and it is just a theory that I thought of. I would personally test the heck out of it before I did this in a production enviorment.

Why not do a restore of the source folder to the new server using whatever backup technology you use?

This would be a good time to test your backup systems and any decent backup software should be able to restore the ACL's.

Why restore ?

It is much easier to use Secure Copy. It is different than robocopy and other such tools in that Secure Copy can migrate large amounts of shares with no problems. This utility can retain all security information like permissions and share permissions. And you don't need to worry about compressed files migration.

Migrating File Share to another server - can choose the third party tool like PCVITA Express Migrator for SharePoint application because it satisfies the needed qualities and give advance benefits for the user while the File Share conversion process in the platforms like SharePoint, Office 365, and BPOS etc process is carried out.
