Migrating user accounts from domain to workgroup

By lebrown86305 ·
I have been asked to remove a number of computers in the domain and place them in a separate workgroup. What is the simplest way to preserve the user accounts in the domain and install them on each local machine? We need to keep the Outlook settings and data and the separate user files so people can access their "stuff" when they log on to the local machine instead of the domain.

Answer Depends

The answer depends if you have Exchange or another mail system using domain credentials authenticating.

If you do not, you would need to create user accounts on each of the systems involved and then follow the directions in the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151 to move it into the new profile.

If you do have Exchange in the picture, you are going to have to prepare the users to be ready to authenticate to Exchange and any other domain application they use, when they open Outlook.
