Migrating Users & Passwords to W2K Pro

By jr0410 ·
Currently, we have a Novell 5.1 server and 25 PCs running Win98. We want to "upgrade" the PCs to W2K Pro. However no two PCs are the same. Most have programs specific to either particular users or offices. There are 80 users who have sign on privileges to all machines for the basic programs that all PCs have and everyone uses. I do not want to do clean installs on the machines because of all of the different software programs. I do not want to re-create all 80 users and passwords on all 25 machines either. Where or how do I create a "master" list of users & passwords that I can use on each PC so that I don't have to re-create them on each PC?

If I understand you correctly you want to do an in-place upgrade. As long as your apps & hardware are W2k complient, then you should have no problem as users as well as apps will port over to the new install, with the exception of your Novell clientsoftware on each PC.

1. Have you verified each of your apps that they will continue to run on W2K?

2. Have you verified your PC's hardware is W2k complient?

3. If not, I recommend that you upgrade ONLY if you have to. Or, if you are going to anyway. Then, get a copy of Ghost and image each PC (To your Novel server) before you upgrade and if you run into a problem on that PC you can then go back to the origianl with out a hitch.

Any questions, just comment back.

A better option is probably to install Zenworks. You can configure Zenworks Workstation to create local accounts on your WinNT or Win2K boxes as soon as a user logs in to your novell network. You can als use roaming profiles on the Novell network. This way you'll never have to worry about local users again.

What we ended up doing is upgrading to the XP Professional instead of trying the upgrade to Win2000. We also installed Zenworks but for future projects. The upgrade to WinXP went without a hitch. Our old DOS programs contiue to work too. When U clikc on a DOS program's icon, the program comes up in a window. To make it display as full screen, we created a bat file off of the executable and press ALT+ENTER to make it full screen.
