migration from vsam to db2

By vahida_s ·

I am trying to evaluate the Cobol stored procedures which will store data in VSAM files. My goal is to migrate the VSAM files to db2.
We are re-writing the existing legacy system in J2EE.
Please give me some tips to how to start my evaluation.

Well, I'm not too familiar with Cobol accessing VSAM but I am with same accessing DB2 and storedprocs, and J2EE.

Basically, if you now have logic accessing VSAM you need to rewrite that logic to use SQL-type tables. And seeing that you choose for Java, there's two places in which you can locate the new logic:
* DB2 Stored procedures (SQL plus, optionally, some Cobol or J2SE Java around)
* J2EE, where the DB2 tables will be accessed using SQL and JDBC drivers.

What is the best location to run, and environment to program, this logic is no easy choice. Depends on many factors, e.g. the gravity balance in your organisation (DB2 vs. J2EE expertise), the latency between the J2EE and DB2 machines (J2EE on Linux-Unix or on z/OS?), the types of applications.
Advice: search web, especially IBM-related sites, with keywords like 'stored procedures DB2 WebSphere'. Advice on the choices in case of WebSphere would roughly apply for any J2EE engine you choose.

Hope thiz helpz,
