I recently purchased an Averatec 6250 laptop with XP Home installed. When I upgraded to OS to XP Pro, Windows stopped recognizing the CD/DVD ROM drive. This laptop is set up so that the DVD player will run independently of the computer, but I don't know if that is a factor in my problem. I couldn't find a driver for this device anywhere on the web. Anyway, I called their tech support and they insisted that the laptop will only run with XP Home and that there is no driver for XP Pro. Does this make sense to anyone else? Did I buy a pig in the poke?

I ran into the same thing when my wife purchased a Toshiba laptop with XP Home on it. The first thing I did was try and upgrade it to XP Pro. When I did the modem would not work and I got the same kind of answer from their tech support. This was a few years ago and she no longer needs the modem so I am going to load Pro on it this weekend and not worry about the modem. Unfortunatly for you the CD/DVD is a little more crucial.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
