Migration of MS Exchange 5.0

By gnet158 ·
We have a single Exchange box and would like to some how copy/migrate all of the users mail boxes to another Exchange box. Here's the catch, we still want all of our users to remain in the production box and take the second exchange box to our lab for testing with NDS corp. edition. I know this is a tuff one and and help would be great.

Migration of MS Exchange 5.0

Actually, what you want to do can be pretty easily accomplished using the same procedure you would use for a single-mailbox recovery procedure. All the information you need to transfer is found in one of the *.edb files.

What you'll do is build the new server with the same Organization and Site as the original server (NT Server name can be the same). Before starting the Exchange services, you'll copy the priv.edb and pub.edb files to the new server, start up the services, run the IS/DS consistency adjuster and you're done.

One caution: make sure both servers are the same Service Pack level (SP2 for v5.0, I assume).

Microsoft has a TechNet article but their site seems to be mis-behaving at the moment.

The best way is to restore the IS (priv.edb & pub.edb) from tape, build a new server with the same name/ make sure it's not on your production network. After server is built install exchange using the same site and org, then restore both the IS and DS, you will now have an exact dup. of your production server. If you don't have a backup just stop the exchange services and copy the following files to your new server priv.edb, pub.edb & ds.edb. good luck. PS make sure that all SP's and hotfixes are installed on new server.
