Migration to Exchange 2000

I want to move to Exchange 2000. We now have Exchange 5.5 and I do not want to upgrade. I want to create a new installation and move mailboxes to it. Is there an easier way to do this with out the ADC. How can the mail clients on the Exchange 2000see the GAL without the ADC? Any sugestion or links would be a great help.
