You cannot migrate to different hardware with the same name as the old server. You must use a different name. You can use the same name if using an in-place upgrade.

Normally, you would attach new server to network (using different computer name), join it to the existing AD domain. Run Dcpromo and then it will become a DC server. Then enable the Global Catalog and move any FSMO roles.

yep, change the name on the W2003 server. Then the ADMT will work.

an alternative to the first answer if your going to retire the W2K server from the network is to change the local domain name but not the public domain name. [2 different local domain names, same public domain name e.g. use an abbreviation of the old domain name]. have the admin account name and password the same on both domains. hook em up to a switch and you can use the ADMT to move users, groups, security accounts, blah blah over to the new server.

you can keep the old server running in case you need to go back to it for stuff you missed or wasn't transfered right but everyone will log on to the new server [new domain].

We use this method when an old single DC network is retiring their DC.
