Military to Civilian - What to Expect?

By MVon20 ·
Hello all! This may seem a bit premature but I am one how must keep his focus clear as to where he's going. I retire from the Air Force in three years and I'd like to have an idea of what to expect IE: job opportunities / salaries / benefits. I havethe idea, it's just not very clear yet!

Background: Seventeen years Aircraft Systems Technician (Crew Chief) one of which was in the Assistant Section Chief position managing 68 personnel. My accomplishments have allowed me to gain my current position as the Maintenance Deficiency Analyst for my Wing. Two Associates Degrees from the Community College of The Air Force: Aerospace Maintenance Systems Technology & Personnel Management. I'm currently a senior at National American University enrolled in three degree programs: IT emphasis in Management Information Systems, B.S., IT emphasis in Project Management, B.S., and Applied Management, B.S. The Applied Management I will take to a Masters Degree. I run a home computer business which I've had for about a year now. I'm planning to take the A+ certification exams in March and I'm also working on the MCSA certification. You may ask how I'm doing this and working full time, it's not easy. Forgot to mention I have a family, been married 19 years, and maintaining a 3.64 GPA.

My Plan: Retire from the USAF in three years and move to the east coast > land first job managing an IT department > become the CIO for a large firm > own my own consulting firm.

Here's where I need help taking the fuzz out of my vision. With the above information and the first step in My Plan, what can I expect (all BULL aside) in mind to job opportunities / salaries / benefits.

Thanks to all that respond.
