Mirror Drive

By philldmc ·
I currently have a W2k Server that the primary Hard drive is 18Gb put is partitioned into 4 smaller drives. The drives are labled under disk manager as "basic". I just installed another 18GB Hard drive and I want this drive to mirror the primary hard drive. How do I do this without losing any information on the primary drive.

I am concerned that If I change the drive from Basic to Dynmic I could lose information.

Mirror Drive

I have converted dozens of drives from Basic to Dynamic, and I have never had any problems. Not once.
I know there are some articles on Technet about freaky conversion problems, so it is wise for you to be concern. Just to be sure, I would disable any anti-virus software that might be running or set to auto-start.
Close all apps running first also before you do this.
If you are really scared, boot into Safe Mode and THEN start the Dynamic conversion (after you get a full tape backup of yourmachine, again just in case!).
But IMHO you should be safe converting the primary disk to Dynamic.
After you do that, and reboot 2 times, go back into Disk Management, right-click on the Primary drive, and select Mirror Drive.
That will start themirroring onto the 2nd drive.

hope this helps

I've never had any problems converting to dynamic drives, either. It does take a couple of re-boots. After that, you start mirroring the partitions and you're all set.

It's definately the type of project to have a verified backup before you start, though (JIC).
