mirror failure

By TechSerf ·
I set up windows 2000 server dynamic volumes, identical disks, on a dell 2200 scsi server. I made the mirror, followed the instructions. however, when I fake a failure of the disk0, the system won't boot off the other mirror. every article I've found says, you need a fault tolerant boot floppy. I followed those instructions, tried every possible ARC path, and it still won't see it.

any suggestions?

Check to see if there is a utility partition on your boot drive - I can't remember if Dell does this, but I know some OEMs do. If so, then that is your problem. You need to install the same size utility partition on your second (mirror) disk in order for it to be bootable. Win2K will not mirror the utility partition, but the system won't boot without it. I've run into this problem with HP systems, too. Hope this helps!

Another thing about Dells is that the raid software usually controls the fail over. Check to make sure you have the latest version installed and configured. I had to go into the Raid control software on a Dell server here to get it to boot. Worst case give Dell a call and they can walk you thru it.

Good Luck

this is software RAID, and the server itself doesn't have RAID.
