Mirror HDD / Copy

By techadmin ·
Dear Sir,
Right now have I have 16.1 GB HDD. Contains two operating Sytems i.e win 98(C:\) and windows 2000 server(D:\). I am running out of space on both drives. File structure is FAT32.
I want to install 40 BG HDD making two partitions.
I wantall my existing installed programs / applications and operating sytems on the new HDD making it as primary. and old one as secondary. Is it possible through any software ?
If yes which one ?
And how ?
Thanks

The three programs below are more than capable of meeting your requirements. I'm sure there are others, but I have used these and can vouch for them.

Partition Magic

Norton Ghost

Partition Magic 8.0. It runs from windows and can accomplish the feat.

You will copy the c partition to the new drive and expand it to fit. This will be two operations.

Then you will delete the c partition on the 16 gig and expand the d partition to fill the drive. Again Two operations.

Get Drive Image- it goes hand in hand with Partition magic. Most of the time when i replace a drive, I use both.
Drive Image will copy the disk image from a to b.
Partition magic will allow you to resize the partitions and set the disk as hidden or active.

Before you go spending money on software, I would check the software that comes with a retail drive or that you can download from the drive maker. I know Western Digital install software can accomplish what you need. Simply install the new drive as a slave, run the install software and use it to format the new drive and copy data. Then set it as Master and the old drive as slave and your good to go. Detailed instructions in the software should help you through this. I can't imagine that Maxtor or any other big name drive maker wouldn't have comparable software either shipped with a retail drive or available for download.

While applying changes partition will some times boot to dos to perform some operations.

This is for Partition Magic 8.0

Install the 40 gig hard drive as a slave.

Boot to win98(c:\)

Start Partition Magic 8

You will see the partition for c: and d:

If there is a partition on the 40gig drive delete it.

Apply Changes. Wait till complete. Might require reboot.

If necessary start Partition Magic 8 again.

Drag the d: partition to the 40 gig drive.

Apply Changes. Wait tillcomplete. Might require reboot.

This will copy the d:(server 2000)partition to the 40 gig drive.

If necessary start Partition Magic 8 again.

Right Click on the 40 gig drive partition and select resize.

Drag the arrow or change the numbers to fill the free space. DO NOT MOVE THE PARTITION TO THE RIGHT IN THE PROCESS.

Apply Changes. Wait till complete. Might require reboot.

Once complete remove both drives and install the 40 gig as a master. Leave the 16 gig off the computer fornow.

Boot the machine into Server 2000 and verify Operation.

You can now install the 16 gig as a slave.

Then if you want to remove the old 2000 server partition on the 16 gig drive you can.

Then you could expand the win 98 partition to fill the 16 gig drive.

Hope this has helped.
