Are you sure its enabled in the Bios?
If yes. I would reinstall win98se. Since you have a Dell computer its very easy to do it just insert the recovery CD you got when you purchased the computer that states reinstallation of win98SE and boot to theCD and choose the option not erease all the data (if ereasing the data is a problem).

Missing CD & Zip in My Computer

When Dell, packaged your computer, it placed all of the WIN .CAB files in its own directory, like C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\. It may also reside on a hidden partition. Do not worry about it.

Right click "My Computer", Left click "Properties" and it will open "System Properties." Left click on "Device Manager" and remove the CD and ZIP. Shut down the computer and let it set for at least a minute to flush the memory. Reboot and let 98 find the drives and install the correct drivers. If thisdoes not work, then use the recovery disk mentioned in answer one. Be careful at using the recovery disk. One wrong move and it will format your drive and all will be lost except for the basic setup and the programs that Dell preloaded.

Hope this helps!

Paul.

Check to make sure that the secondary IDE controller in Device Manager does not have a conflict and is working correctly. I am assuming that the ZIP and CD are both internal. If there is a conflict on that controller in windows that would explain why they can be seen in DOS. If there is a conflict find out which device is conflicting and either remove, disable, or modify the device to a different setting.

Try this: click on start, and then run. In the run dialog box, type ni the drive letter for the cdrom dirve (make sure there is a cd in the drive) If it's the D drive, type in d and then press enter. If an explorer window open up with the contentsof the drive, then here's your solution:

You need to instal the TweakUI power tool. You may find it on the Win98SE CD, or you may have to search for it and download it. Either way, once it is installed, open it from the control panel, go to the my computer tab, and make sure that all drive letters are checked.

Several times now I have encountered systems that have never had tweakUI installed, and they suddenly have one or more of their dirves deleted from the display.
