Missing Desktop

By Elecstix ·
I have a Compaq Evo N1015v which boots quite happily but does not display the taskbar and desktop even in safe mode. explorer.exe is not started and no tasks can be run from task manager which reports file association difficulties. No strange processes appear to be running.
Anyone have any ideas on how to rectify the problem? Many thanks.

File association dificulties? Could you post the message?

Your best bet is to rerun setup, I assume it is a full recover partition or disks as per usual with Compaq's, don't get me wrong, that's a good thing but a pain in the butt at times like this. I have had several EVO's, desktops and a laptop they're great.

Try posting some specifics of the file association difficulties and I'll see what I can come up with, you're probably going to need to run setup though.
If you could get in with Safe Mode you could run the file checker but outside of that it sounds like a hardware conflict that will require system files reinstalled.

Post back and we'll see what's going on.

Try to scan the hdd for virus in a different system. Just slave it into a box with a current anti-virus software and updates on. It very much sounds like typical symptoms of Magistr infection that has been running for awhile.
