missing file

By sasavml ·
At my company I have a problem with the network printer for occasionally I get the message that I?m not connected to it.
When that happens I restart my comp. and then I print whatever I have to regularly. Today I have made some changes in an Excelfile ? a research I?ve been working on for months, so I wanted to print the page I have changed. Again I got the message that I?m not connected to the network printer so I?ve restarted my comp. And when I tried to open the excel file, I have a desktop shortcut for it, I got the message that comp. couldn?t find the file. Then I have opened the folder that file has been placed into and SHOCK! The file wasn?t there! I looked everywhere for it, recycle bin, temp folder, find files and folders option, some of my colleagues tried to help me, one of them is a professional but nothing... I just can not believe that I have lost the file I?ve been working for months on. Please help!!

Is it possible that the file somehow got "renamed"?

Do a file find of ALL .xls files. Perhaps you'll find one with a very similar name - if it did indeed get renamed.

And, if necessary, you can do the search with the "date modified" filter soyou can find the files edited between certain dates.

Good luck,

Maxwell

Try opening Excel and click on File at the top of the screen (File, Edit, View, Insert, etc). At the bottom of the menu, you should see a list of numbered files. If the file you are looking for is in the list, click on it. The list is the last so many files you have worked on in Excel. The list will point to the file even if you have inadvertantly saved it somewhere else. On the off chance that you also inadvertantly renamed it, try every file in the list.

You can also try the documents section on the start button. It does the same thing as described above, but for all programs.

Make sure that when you do a search using find, you search in My Computer and check the search subfolders box.

If the file was stored on a network drive, it is likely that your systems group has a backup of it that they can restore for you. It won't be the latest, but at least you won't be starting from scratch.

See if the file has been rename to a ????.tmp file. Sometimes the file will save as a temporary file and place it in a temporary directory, and all you need to to is rename it back and move it back. You should be able to recover most of that file if this is the case in your situation.

Good Luck.
