Missing Groups

By Steven Booth ·
First I will state that this happened after msblast incident which my company we heavily infected by on mostly laptops. We had to manually remove the virus for the most part but we also were able to use the fixblast application supplied by Norton. Then we applied the KB823980 patch.

Now we are seeing a lot of quirkiness in the laptops, most vexing is that on some of the machines we've noticed that the local groups are missing, try to recreate them and it will say that they exist already. We also seen where we try to add a user to a group and it will state that the user is already part of the group such as administrator but does not get admin rights nor can the name be found.

Has anyone else seen this or no of a solution?

I've faced the similar situation (can't locate anyone in group) but not after those silly Blaster.worm catastrophic accident. This solution might seem silly, but worth to try. Uninstall IPX/SPX/NETBIOS and reinstall the protocol. By the way no guarantee it will work.

In a few instances I have had to reinstall Office, run System File Checker, and in on case had to reapply Service Pack (that was a Windows 2000 tho).
