Missing Information In Network Neighborh

By pheonix11 ·
I ma having a problem on a few of our Windows 98 machines. If you go to network neighborhood you cannot see any of our Windows NT servers or other machines that have file and print sharing enabled. The one machine I have looked at extensively that is having the problem is running IP,IPX,NETBEUI,has file and print sharing enabled and also has Microsoft Client for Microsoft networks installed. The interesting thing is if you go to a machine that is working properly you can see the machine that cant see anything else.... In addition the machine can see out novell servers without a problem.

Make sure all the machines are set to the same workgroup. This is set in the Identification tab of the network properties.

Hope this helps.

1) Make sure that file and print sharing is enabled under TCP/IP properties

2) Make sure that the workgroup name (under the Indentification tab in NN) is set to the name of the domain

3) Remove IPX and NetBEUI if they are not needed.

Reinstall the Clients From Microsoft Network and select the option that apply to the local machine, include all the systems that are to share resources, use identification tab to identify your pc on the network and to specify the workgroup to which itbelongs, identification tab located on Network properties sheet.

Pheonix 11:
Sounds like a combination of things:
1. Remove microsoft client, re-boot
2. Re-install microsoft client.
3. Do you really need file and print sharing enabled? Shouldn't be necessary in a server/client environment.
4. Remember browsing can take up to 15 minutes to update.
5. Also, you shouldn't need Netbeui - it creates extra network traffic. IP and IPX should suffice.
6. Finally if you are still having problems it could be a master browser problem.. I experienced something similiar, especially in a multi-platform environment. WIN 95/98 like to take over as master browsers. You can turn this off in file and print sharing under advanced. The PC can announce itself, but cannot become Master (two options)
GOODLUCK!!
