missing load.exe

By aljr888 ·
I deleted the file 'load.exe' which Norton Antivirus cannot repair nor inoculate, as another option for fixing the W32.Nimda.A@mm.
Virus it detected. And when I restarted my pc, a message came up 'cannot locate load.exe'. How can I reinstall it?Install copy of load.exe from another clean pc?

missing load.exe

Hi,
I think you'll find that load.exe was created by the virus, and is not a system file. As such, I wouldn't be too eager to find another copy to load on : )

Typically, Nimda edits the system.ini and adds a line telling the OS to run load.exe at start up, you (rightfully)deleted it which is why the OS is prompting you. Have a look at the system.ini and alter the line - usually looks something like

shell=explorer.exe load.exe -dontrunold

NOTE that the line SHOULD be

shell=explorer.exe

Hope this helps....

BTW depending on your OS, the system.ini should be in the windows directory. If you can't get into windows at the mo', boot into dos, and use edit to check the file.

Unfortunately your pretty much dead in the water. You may try copy it over from dos but it stil might not work. I had the same problem and the end result was that I had to wipe the drive clean and reinstall the operating system. You can also try reinstalling the OS over it self. put your os disk in and boot up on your boot floppy go to your cd-rom drive and type setup. The os should reinstall over itself without losing anything. Good Luck.

Don't worry, it is a way to fix this problem.
Just follow the instructions that this URL gives you and you'll be ok in no time.
LOAD.EXE is an executable file built by the Nimda virus, so don't worry about it, you can delete it latter, just go to Start, Run, type Systedit, go to System.ini and remove load.exe from the RUN option, the just save and go out of sysedit.
Please follow the instructions that Symantec gives so you can make sure you've got rid of this virus.

Good luck,

@lberto
