Message appearing at startup-‘missing operating system’. The computer is an old Gateway 2000 with a VGA monitor, Toshiba 4X CD ROM, 64 M memory, and IDE hard drive capability. The hard drive I tried to install was a Maxtor 2.1 M IDE drive bought used at a trade show in an attempt to save money for the office. The CMOS setup has been checked, everything good, 3.5 floppy ‘A’ drive recognized and first in line for boot. The cables have been checked, everything seems to be set for one hard drive and the usual booting procedure. The jumper settings were checked and an install install program bootup disk for Maxtor hard drives downloaded from the sellers website. I attempted to boot the machine using that disk as well as Win98SE bootup disk, nothing works. Any suggestions on how to make the machine read from the ‘A’ drive and fdisk the hard drive?
