While installing windows98 on a compaque desktop computer I received the error 'windows\system\vmm32.vxd file missing' when the system tried to boot. What caused this error and how can I correct it.

Usually when I get .vxd errors when installing W98, it points to a RAM problem.

If you have over 511MB of RAM installed, reduce RAM to less than 511MB.

Otherwise, swap in different RAM modules and see if that helps.

You may need to wipe out the VXD files in the folders under C:\Windows\System32 to get Windows to re-install and function.
