Mixed Domain controllers

By dhegner ·
I am in the process of migrating an old Server 2000 network to a 2003 platform. Does anybody know of any great issues with setting up one of the 2003 servers as a backup Domain controller in the current Domain and promoting it to primary when the time comes ??? Of course the current set up has a 2000 Primary Domain controller.

As always I appreciate the help.

The most

important thing to keep in mind is that 2003 will want to have the Forest and Domain 'prepped' before joining into the 2000 controlled Domain. You will need to run the adprep and forestprep utilities on the 2000 server(s). Then you'll be able to promo the 2003 server up into the domain. Once they replicate ok, you'll be able to dcpromo down the 2000 server.

Having a Directory Partition Error

by Robotech In reply to The most

I ran forest prep and domain prep using the W2K3 CD R2 on my 2000 Server (SP4)with no errors, but once I try to make my 2003 server a DC by running the AD install wizard I get the following error:

The operation failed because:

Active Directory could not replicate the directory partition CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=bloke,DC=com from the remote domain controller COWBOY.

"The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

Are you still doing the migration?

I am in the process of doing a very similar migration. I have been making notes on the task that will be done, and the supporting documents. Let me know if you want to have talk.

I have been collecting a bunch of articles to create a workplan from. Did you complete your migration yet? Care to share notes?
