Modem

How can I get my modem to speed up to at least 38800Bps, I have downloaded 2 different upgrades for the modem (LT) from driverguide.com and neither seem to work. Is there an added setting for this?

Under modem properties, make sure that your maximum connection speed is set to 52000, or 115000 (just a default).

It is possible that 38800 is all the faster that your phone lines and phone system will support.

Try up-plugging the phones in the house, and see if you get a faster connection.
If so, one of the phones or phone cords has a noise problem.

Check with your neighbors. See what ISP they use, and what speed they connect at.
If you all connect at about the same speed, the problem is at the switch at the central office, or the trunkline between your homes and the switch.

When you use the phone for voice, is the line noisy?
If so, talk to your phone company about improving the line.

Other things to do:
Verify that the DNS and other settings are as specified by your ISP.
Try a differnt phone number for your ISP, and see if you get a faster connection.

Bypass any surge supressors on your phone line.

You can check you house wiring by connection to a jack directly connected to the phone junction with the rest of the house disconnected.

Are there power lines running right next to phone lines?
This can cause noise on the phone line.

If your telco happens to have a DA (digital to analog) converter on the line you use you will never exceed 28.8 kbs.
