Modem and SP2 not playing well together

By nsceml ·
Modem works fine with SP1, when Sp2 is installed modem is not available in device mgr. When modem driver is reinstalled in Sp2, everything appears to install as normal, except that modem never appears in device mgr. and never works. I have tried to install 3 different modems under Sp2, none will actually install but I even get the baloon pop-ups telling me I have "whatever" modem installed and working properly, but it never really installs. When I restore back to SP1, everything works normally.

It's not a problem that I've seen with any upgrade to SP 2. What type of Modems are you using?

Well even though they are Software Modems they should be recognized by XP and installed. Are you using the supplied CD when you are asked if you want to install the Modems?

Even if they are not Digitally Signed with MS they should still work.

When you installed any of these modems did you get a message up that the item was not Digitally Signed by MS? I've just run a reinstall of XP and found that every device with older drivers that isn't Digitally Singed with MS will no longer work properly so I'm in the process of downloading the latest drivers.

That may be a solution for you as well.

In device manager, make sure you check the option 'Show Hidden Devices', as it may be a bug in SP2 that hides it.

Also, is this a dial up modem? and how old is it?

all three were garden variety dial-up win modems, just different chip mfg. The original was a netodragon and I am aware of those problems, thats why I tried two others. The neto is about 1 yr old, the two I brought onsite were NIB. Interesting thought about hiding in device mgr, granted, I haven't checked that but I can't recall DM ever hiding anything except non PnP devices/drivers and maybe a few other arcane items. I really don't think this is the case though. Yes, I tried switching PCI slots.

Just a thought..have you checked the mfg's site for updated driver or if it is compatible with SP2?; or does this modem require an 'enumerator'(usually an HFC file in device mgr) that may be missing from the SP2 set-up? Also you may want to check your IRQ's through DM to resolve a posible conflict. Good luck ..... H
