Modem Can't Make Data Connection

By jbt8 ·
My grandmother has an HP Pavilion 6630 unfortunately, and I can't get it to connect to the internet. She called their support line, and you know how it goes... they just give her the runaround. I've been messing with it, and I can get the modem tomake phone calls, but it won't connect to the internet; I've used three different ISPs, and the modem dials and tries to establish a connection, but just hangs. I work at Penn State's computer center, and I've tried a lot of different things, but maybe there's something I'm missing. Anyone got any ideas?

You're most likely using a 56K modem. Try changing the connection speed down to 19K and then dialing. If that doesn't work keep lowering it down to 14K. Some phone list won't support the 56K connection and although they are suppose to negotiate down to what they can get, sometime that doesn't work. If you do get connected at 19K try moving up to 24, 28, 32 and so on until you get dropped again and then back off some again. This has work many times for me in the past, it's a pain, but it works.

Good luck!

Double check the TCP/IP settings,
DNS configuration,

And primary logon.
I know for my ISP, that the primary logon needs to be set to client for Microsoft networks.

You didn't mention which O/S she was running but this info should apply to all. In the network configuration box all she should need if not networked is "Client for Microsoft Networks", "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP". Anything else not needed. Also since you have already spent some time on this so if the O/S is one of the Windows desktop solutions you may want to remove and readd your communications. If you need more specific info please email me.

The other ideas are great..:-) it also could be as simple as making sure you check the box to turn off the call waiting in the dial-up setup. If your grandmother does have call waiting and you do not check the box, sometimes it will hang just like you described... it happened to me :-)

I agree, all the above suggestions are great.
Perhaps an initialisation string in the modem extra settings might help. A generic one I have found useful (especially for modems with Rockwell chipsets) is z+ms=11
