Modem Connection

By Craig Pond ·
I am having an issue with my home pc (XP Professional) which keeps dropping its connection to the internet, I have checked all the usual places (modem properties, internet settings)and have even changed the phone line but to no avail, also when the connection drops it will not reconnect me as it will not open a port, I have to reboot the computer to reconnect. To compound the problem the other computer in the house which uses the same ISP does not have this problem, making me think that it is asetting within XP or hardware, please help it is driving me mad

This may be caused if the IP Security (IPSec) policy fo TCP/IP is set to Server

THis may be because the clien and server configuration are not compatible

Click Start, point to Settings, then click Network and Dial-up Connections

Right-click the icon for your ISP ,then click Properties

Click the Networking tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties

Click Advanced,select the Options tab

Click IP Security ,then clilck Properties

In the Use this IP Security policy box, click Client (Respond Only) or Donot Use IPSEC

click OK

Have you updated the modem driver and firmware? I would try this first.

There is a slight chance that your modem is not 100% compatible with XP. XP likes to use IRQ sharing and if your modem does not support this feature that would explain your disconnects and reboots to get it going again.

IF your modem is an ISA modem that could be causing the problem. ISA slots are not XP friendly.

If that doesn't work I would spend $15 and get a new modem.

Just a suggestion
