Modem dials then hangs up

By jon_w31 ·
I have a windows 95 system , new modem. The modem has tested OK. The system is on a 2 pc network direct cable via network cards.
When trying to connect to the internet the modem dials then immediatly the dial tone is heard again. I have listenedin on a phone attatched to the modem.
The modem has been tried using the system as a stand alone on a different line and it works ok?

Help appreciated

Is this the Host or Client computer that modem is installed on?

Open the Internet Properties and select the Connections tab, under the Dial-Up Settings, make sure that the Always dial my default connection

Open My Computer and click on properties and in the Device Manager panel check for any IRQ conflicts, then click on modem, make sure only the modem installed is listed and try troubleshooting form this panel

If you need to dial a number to get an outside line you will hear the dial-tone, then a pause and then the dial-tone again before it dials. Some systems require a 9 for outside line and some require 99 (or other numbers).

Also, it might help to put your ISP IP address into the dialup connection.

Using the computer as a stand alone on a different line works? Ok. Next, try the computer as a stand alone on the phone line that you are having trouble with. If that works skip the next step. Test the phone line. Next try lowering the "connect at startup speed" under modem properties to something reasonable like 33600 or 28800. See if you can call your ISP's number with a regular phone to make sure a modem/computer answers. Sometimes the ISP number can be wrong or the ISP could be down. Try connecting again. If you get the stand alone to work properly next connect it to your network. Are you trying to use a direct connection wizard to share an internet connection? If you are, win 95 doesn't do that. Win 98/SE/ME do. Could be that the NIC and modem share the same resources but then either one of them wouldn't work period. Look in Device manager any way to look for conflicting resources. If you find any fix them. That's about all I can do for you.
