Modem disconnecting

By nedly1 ·
I have a 6 month old Compaq7470. I have had problems keeping my modem connected to the Internet since I bought it. Technical support has had me try everything (reformatting my hard drive to eliminate software conflicts, checked all my modem settings etc.) They finally came and replaced the modem, but the problem persists. They are blaming my ISP, but I use several and I also have a Mac that I use on the same line and same ISP's and it doen't disconnect me. It doesn't happen all the time, but I cannot figure out a pattern to when it happens. Any ideas? or should I get a cable modem and forget the whole thing?

I've noticed on some windows computers, if you have added networking support (Network neighborhood)problems can occur with dial up connections. If possable, try removing network neighborhood.

HiI to own compaq's but I did find out many things from theem and the first thing I have found out is that they have win modems. Win modems run on soft ware as well as hardware, and if you are running windows 98 they will eat up systmes resourses which is as you probably know is not good for error free computing. WWhat I have foound to end tis problem is to uninstallyour win modem and install a hardware, I use 3com pci modems and they work just fine with compaq's. I even notice an improvement in rate of connection. rockyolson@charter.net

This was happening to me and it turned out to be my phone line. The two wires were switched and it will still allow voice transfer but not very reliable data transfer. I switched the wires and all is well. Radio Shack sells a test device to determine if your wires are crossed. Good luck

When they installed a new modem, did they update the driver? See if there is an updated version, then go and check the line. You could also try lowering the connection speed, in the modem properties. Try also replacing the cable from the modem tothe phone jack.

All the aforementioned tips i find useful but i will like to add that you look to see if there are any communications software installed on your system. Some examples are, internet phone and fax software eg. Netoptimiser, Media Ring Talk etc. These utilities load at startup and SIT on the comms port and contend with your modem for resource allocation. I recommend you install these applications only when you decide to use them.
