Modem not dialing When Phone Line is OK

by whopi In reply to Modem not dialing When P ...

I would be nice to know which Windows do you run, the brand of this modem and the type of connection (ISDN or PSTN).
It it an internal modem on the PCI bus, it could be from two families: the classical hardware assited modem, and the software modem. the last one needs CPU computing power to filter out the analog telephone signal, and very often needs at least a Pentium 166 with MMX instruction set.

Let us bet that this is a PentiumIII with Windows 98Se, do you see the modem in the Modem porperty screen ? Select the diagnostics menu and ask for complementary diagnostics info from the third item (not the com1 nor com2).

If the modem as been valabl-y installed you will get a number of lines beginning with ATI1 ATI2, ATI3... and the charcteristics of the modem.

Then, the easiest way to check the modem is using the telephone dialer in the Communication accessories.

Typical failure messages are: modem not present ou No dial tone.

IS this an external modem valably installed ? Then it can be an USB modem or a serial modeme on COM1 or COM2.
Sale check with the diagnostics but with appropriate interface.
If you seen No dial tone, please check the cable and the plug. Wall plugdepends on particular countries. But on the modems, the RJ11 plastic jack uses the two central contacts out of four.

Hi
The problem can be the phone cable, the jack, the modem , modem installation. the modem driver , a bad slot if it is a card or wrong modem for the OS. I mention every possible problem that i know that could cause a problem for a modem.

1.Connection and tone.
The phone line is not connected properly or damage.The modem is given a command that disabled dial tone detection.
Check If the cord is crimped, cut or damaged which may prevent the signal going through. Check that the line is hokked to the jack marked Line In.Try connecting a phone to the jack that the computer uses and check for a dial tone. Make sure the other extension on this line is not bussy or not hanged during trying to dial. Test the modem with HyperTerminal to see if it can detect the dial tone.If it detect dial tone when you are using HyperTerminal, but does not detect dial tone when you are using DUN then you may need to upgrade your DUN and make sure that it is using the correct modem and it is setup correctly.Finally check with the Phone company for help for any restrections or so.

2.Hardware problems with the modem.
TO check if your modem not defective.
My Computer-> control panale -> modem -> diagnostic -> the com prot which has the modem-> more info
If the modem is not functioning properly you may have a hardware problem. Check the modem and the PC manufacturer site for help. Check for support and FAQ and software or hardware compatabilities or you could contact them for more help.
Some new modems come with an electronic circuit ,but not the electro mechanical relay which
makes it not reliable when trying to take the modem off hook until unplugging, then plugging in this case you need to arepair or replace it.

3. conflict between the modem and another hardware Port, IRQ or memory addresses.
To change the resurces such as the COM com port

3. conflict between the modem and another hardware Port, IRQ or memory addresses.
To change the resurces such as the COM com port
My Computer-> properties -(TAB TO) device manager-> (click) the "+" near the modem-> select the modem - >properties->(TAB) to Modem - in port choose a port from the availble ones. exit answer yes to the message says "reboot".

4.Installation.
This could be software or hardware installation problem.
For software, reinstall the software and preferable that it is the lates from vendor site and is the right one for the OS.
For hardware, afirm setting the modem in the slot or change the modem to another PCI slot if the slots is bad. or if it is external modem make sure the cable connected to the PC serial orUSB is connected firmly and the correct external port..

5. Type of modem.
Winmodem will not work in DOS or a low CPU horse power, since it is depending in a driver wich use windows multi processing and CPU.

6. Problem in software setting.
Check the proper selection of the country and it is supported in the driver you installed.
start-> setting -> control panael->->Telephony.
Check the modem setting such as wait for dial tone before dialing.
start-> setting -> control panael-> modem ->select the modem-> Properties -> (TAB) Connection -> check the box

7.Voice mail on the phone line.
Check the phone for a broken dial tone or beeps which indacte a voice mail message is waiting.
Check your voice mail.
Uncheck "wait for dial tone before dialing"
start-> setting - control panael-> modem ->select the modem-> Properties -> (TAB) Connection -> uncheck the box

8. Device driver.
Make sure that the driver is the latest and the right one for your operating system.

9.surge protector.
Make sure that the line has to go from the wall to the surge protector, then from the surge protector to the modem.

10. Envirnment.
Check for interferance of

10. Envirnment.
Check for interferance of the phone or modem of any device or magnatec or electrical fields.
During a storm a modem could be damge if it was connected.
=====
Types of modems:
There are two different types of modems hardware and software based.
Software modems unfortunately are the most common. These are usually the modems that come pre-builted in computers. They are less expensive than hardware modems because there are fewer chips needed on the modem. The problem with this type of modem is that the CPU has to make up for the lack of processing power on the modem. Software modem configuration can be messy, because software modems use a range of memory addresses instead of a fixed memory address. Software modems require a DLL file that loads into memory at startup, using some of Windows' resources. There are two types of software modems, controllerless and HSP.
Controllerless modems perform the modulation/demodulation function, they rely on the processing powerof the computer to do the compression and error correction. The drivers for the modem are what actually tell your processor and the modem how to communicate with each other.
HSP modems actually do away with the modulation/demodulation, compression and error correction on the modem and pass all of this over to your computer via software. These modems are notorious for connection and speed problems, especially on slower computers.
Hardware modems actually do all of the modulation/demodulation, error correction and compression. This leaves all of your computer's resources free to process other tasks. This is the type of modem UIA recommends in order to get a solid 56K connection.

Good luck

ok first and formost when you attempt to dial out do you here a tone? Is there an error code when utilizing your dialup connection (678 no dial tone, 666 bad modem)Did you check the device mgr for conflicts? Expand the modem + sigh to see if there are any ghost modems, should only show 1 modem? You didnt specify what type of modem brand or v90,v92? If you have 95/98/me hit ctrl+alt+delete simultaneously to bring up the task manager box. Locate the listing of rnaapp (this should only be there ifactivly trying to connect. if running the modem thinks the phone is busy/dead like when u dont hang it up properly. This usually happens in the instance of a energy spike.), click to highlight it, click end task, reboot, and then re-attempt to connect. Also how long is phone cord? If longer than 15ft get a shorter one, might be attentuation ( too long for signal to travel over cheap phone cord.)Remove any splitters or surge protectors to ensure clean unfiltered signal that is probably the problem? Did you properly install dialup software? Hit back with answers to questions and you will be surfing in no time.
